Carla B. Vendeland Memorial Scholarship

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP
Picture
Newport High School parent Carla Vendeland created the PTSA Knight Valor Program in 1989, which recognizes Newport students who choose to spend their time making a difference in their community. Carla herself was an avid volunteer working tirelessly to support efforts to fight world hunger and the importance of education. She had an incredible gift of identifying people's strengths.

Carla B Vendeland passed away in 1994 after a long bout with cancer, and in 1996, the Carla B. Vendeland Scholarship was established in her memory and is now administered by the Bellevue Schools Foundation.

At least one, $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to graduating Newport High School seniors who are Knight Valor scholarship recipients.

Deadline to apply this year is Sunday, May 17, 2026.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be:
·        a graduating senior; and
·        earned the PTSA Knight Valor Award

NHS and NHS PTSA are no longer approving community service hours beyond forty (40) hours.
  • Students who have more than forty (40) community service hours will receive a PTSA Knight Valor pin. NHS PTSA will distribute the pins to graduating seniors in June of senior year at NHS.
  • (40) hours is a BSD requirement for high school graduation; (41 or more) hours earns Knight Valor pin.
  • Students who volunteer at a non-profit organization regularly should keep record of their own hours. You may choose to mention your community service in the Common App college application and/or resume.
  • Students applying to the Carla B. Venderland Award which is due in May 17, 2026, we will check references of your non-profit organization and review your scholarship application. Scholarship criteria is based on number of hours and quality of community service.
